Outpatient Treatment

in Treatment

Outpatient drug and Alcohol rehabilitation is a "lower intensity" and more cost effective alternative to the long term residency programs. It is not a substitude for Residential Intensive Treatment.
Outpatient does offer complete, varied, and highly specific programs created to address drug addiction problems of individuals while remaining in their homes. They are based more on education than therapy.

Outpatient is highly recommended for those individuals who need a support system post residential treatment. Often times outpatient rehabilitation is split into outpatient individual therapy, family therapy, and group therapy.

The difference between Outpatient and Residential Treatment
While residential rehab asks patients to come to their location and stay, 24/7 for a determined period of time, outpatient treatment programs allow the individual to maintain a large portion of their day-to-day lives while going through treatment. While this creates some different experiences in terms of immersion, you will generally find that the core counseling plan is similar in both types of programs. There are also some differences in terms of cost, as many residential programs are likely to be more expensive that their outpatient counterparts.

Outpatient programs may include
◦ Drug screenings
◦ Drug and alcohol evaluations
◦ Intensive Outpatient Programs – such as
     Group therapy
     Individual and family counseling
     Drug education
    12-Step principles of recovery
     Relapse prevention

◦ Primary Outpatient Programs – drug and alcohol education, as well as group discussions
◦ Individual Therapy – alone or in combination with group therapy
◦ Aftercare Support Groups
◦ Educational programs
◦ Intervention Services
◦ Marital and family counseling
◦ Relapse treatment

These programs are often mandated by Drug Court and In addition to being present to the facility, client are required to attend 12 step meetings twice a week or required after Inpatient rehab treatment.

Finally, outpatient treatment prepares the individual for life after rehab treatment. This includes advising them on after-care programs, setting up appointments for further counseling, and generally making the transition into a life without drugs as easy and effective as possible.
